ln Taebaek City, there are famous places such as Mt. Taebaek, the nation's spiritual mountain, which is a root to make it possible that mountains extended from Mt. Baekdoo are extended to all the mountains and rivers in the south of the Han River, Gumryeong Swamp, the origin of the Han River, which becomes the main potable water supply of Seoul, and Whanggi Pond, the fountainhead of the Nakdong River, which forms the life-giving water of the Youngnam district.
The city is provided with various places for sightseeing and entertainment such as Taebaek Coal Museum where you can see the history of the coal industry at a glance with the background of its previous role as the center of the coal industry, Yongyeun Cave which is located in the highest place in Korea, and Fossil Museum.
Taebaek which is the origin of the potable water for Korean people and is the nearest one from the sky keeping the ancient legend is on the way of changing into a city for plateau sightseeing and leisure sports.
 
Topography
It is a highland city for leasure sports which is located at the altitude of 650 meters in a steep mountain pass. Various inclination exists due to the vertical ground altitude. A dense forest and topographical undulation make the altitude differ greatly and the scenery look fantastic.

- It has a longer winter season than the other regions owing to the pervasive influence of the continent climate and oceanic climate.
- It is the most suitable place for summer vacation due to the cold temperature in the summer and inhabitation difficulties of noxious insects.

Location
Taebaek City is located at the southern tip of Gangwon Province. Seokpo-myeon, Bonghwa-gun and Sangdong-eup, Yeongwol-gun are located in the south; Dogye-eup, Samcheok-gun in the east and Gohan-eup, Jeongseon-gun in the west, thereby bordering with one gun(county) in Gyeongsang Bukdo Province and three cities and guns in Gangwon Province. Baekdu Daegan passes through from the north to southwest. Taebaek is the backbone of the Korean peninsula, the root of our land, and the source of such important rivers as the Nam Han and the Nakdong.
This highland city is located at an average altitude of 650 meters above sea level. It has a longer winter and receives more snow than other areas, and is thus blessed with beautiful snow-covered scenery. Summers are short and cool and almost completely insect-free, with an average temperature is 19¡É. In addition, Taebaek is located just an hour's drive from the East Sea, and is thus in close proximity not just to valleys and mountains, but to beaches as well.
