Introduction |
Mt. Taebaek shares its boundary
with the following regions: Daehyeon-ri, Seokpo-myeon,
Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongsangbukdo Province; Sodo-dong, Mungok,
Taebaek City; and Cheonpyeong-ri, Sangdong-myeon, Yeongwol-gun,
Gangwondo Province. Mt. Taebaek, 1,567 meters above sea
level, is located between 128¡ã56¡äeast longitude and 37¡ã05¡änorth
latitude. The water originating from this mountain forms
the Nakdong River, lifespring of the Yeongnam plain. It
also forms the Han River and Osip Stream, and thus serves
as the nation's spiritual mountain, and a root for all
mountains, located in the southern part of the Koran peninsula.
Centering on Yeongbong where Cheonjebong peak is located,
Mt. Taebaek is comprised of Janggunbong peak (1568 meters
above sea level) in the north, Munsubong peak (1,517 meters
above sea level) in the east and Busoebong (1,546 meters
above sea level) in between. With fewer cliffs and smooth
slopes, everybody regardless of age can easily climb Mt.
Taebaek. On its summit grow a variety of wild edible vegetables,
and in spring, full blossomed azaleas greet the climber.
In summer, dense stands of green trees and cool, clean
water in valleys carry visitors far away from the summer
heat. In autumn, maple trees unveil their palate of colors,
and in winter yew trees grace the snow-clad landscape.
All in all, Mt. Taebaek is regarded as the nation's mother
mountain, a place of beauty and tolerance. The sunrise
and sunset as viewed from the summit of Mt. Taebaek is
grandiose, making us to feel as if we were near to heaven.
On top of that, when the air is clear, we can see as far
as the East Sea. Yongjeong and Yongdam, the nation's finest
ponds.
On May 13, 1989, Mt. Taebaek's 17.44
? land area was designated as Provincial Park. It provides
accommodation including condominium-type lodging facilities,
restaurants and picnic sites. It also houses the Coal
Museum, where you can learn about the history of coal.
In winter, a large-scale snow sledding site is prepared.
