History

Taebaek is located on the upper stream of the Nakdonggang, so its water flows in a wild curve. There are many streams, and a log bridge serving to connect villages located on opposite sides of the river. The river in front of Gumunso is particularly wide a log bridge is located here, made of several boards. According to the legend of the Palace of the Dragon King by Eom Jong-han, a precious vase brought from the palace of the dragon king was stolen by a married daughter. When she crossed the log bridge in front of Gumunso, she accidentally dropped the vase into the water, thus inadvertently returning it to its original place. This log bridge was known to have been very steep and long. If this log bridge was washed away during the heavy summer rains, a new log bridge was built, so that people could safely use it until the next rainy season. Due to modernization, this log bridge has been replaced by a concrete bridge, providing a crucial connection between Gangwondo Province and the Yeongnam region.
Manufacturing a Log Bridge
To make a log bridge, a whole log was split in half, and both halves were then placed across a stream. A long board was enough to bridge a narrow stream, but if the watercourse was wide, several boards were linked together to form a continuous span. In this case, holes were bored in the boards to be linked and a wooden post was inserted to serve as a support for the bridge. People of the two villages combined their efforts to construct this bridge. They began their work each on their own side of the stream, and would eventually meet in the middle and link their boards to make a single bridge. Throughout this process several different types of work had to be done: trees had to be felled, logs had to be cut with a ripsaw, the wood then had to be carried to a stream, and finally the whole thing assembled to form a bridge.
