History

aebaek is located in the highlands of Korea. There are many mountains here rising to over 1,000 meters above sea level. From ancient times many fire-field farmers lived here. In deep mountains wild animals roamed such as boar, deer, and roe deer. In winter, when there was snow on the ground, fire-field farmers went hunting for these wild animals. In particular, when hunting, almost everyone in the group went together. Children and old people served as chasers, while strong young people would wield the spears, killing those animals herded towards them by the chasers. The meat from these hunts was evenly distributed amongst the group, thereby supplying scarce protein for all during the winter months. The hunt itself also served to strengthen cooperation and unity amongst the group.
Game Details
When it snowed, people gathered to discuss the hunt, and to prepare equipment, including spears. Then they would practice their hunting skills. After completing a rehearsal, chasers with musical instruments such as kkaengwari and notyangpun, would begin their work. Then the spear holders would take up their positions. When the animals herded their way by the chasers appeared, the spear holders would kill them. The one who killed the first was called 'seonchangkkun', and received the biggest share of the meat; the second best man was called 'jaechangkkun', and the third - 'samchangkkun'. After completing the hunt, the people would offer their thanks to the mountain god, and offer these animals to a deity. After returning to the village, the remaining meat was distributed in accordance to everyone's effort. During this time, all the people in the village would get together and conduct a festival to enhance their unity and harmony.
