The Mt. Taebaek Snow Festival is one of Taebaek’s most celebrated festivals based on winter snow using the regional features of Taebaek, a highland city located 700m above sea level. The festival first began in 1994 and it has become one of Korea’s most famous winter festivals that offers a wide variety of snow sculptures and winter activities with the magnificent snowcapped mountains of Taebaek in the backdrop in January of every year. The 23rd snow festival in 2016 and the 24th in 2017 held large-scale snow sculpture exhibits, Mt. Taebaek hiking tournaments, and a variety of contents including igloo cafes and starlight festival. It was also selected as a cultural tourism festival for three consecutive years from 2010 to 2012. In 2017, Mt. Taebaek, which is the main venue of the Mt. Taebaek Snow Festival, was promoted to a national park.

The Taebak Han River and Nakdong River Festival is a festival that began in 2016 with national funding themed after the cool climate of Taebaek and being the source of the Han River with Geomnyongso and the Nakdong River with Hwangji Pond. The Cool Cinema Festival and Water Festival that were held until 2015 became part of the Han River and Nakdong River Festival, and it also includes a wide range of programs themed after the source of the rivers such as the fountain tunnel, sprinkle tunnel, Forest of Wishes, and wild flower tracking at Hwangji Pond and Geomnyongso. Moreover, it expanded programs in link with hydroponic cities of the Han River and Nakdong River such as invitational performances of hydroponic cities as it aims to become a nation-wide festival.
