Hwangji Pond, located at the center of Taebaek-si, is the source of the 420km-long Nakdonggang.
Water springing from this pond flows across the huge Yeongnam Plain. This pond is divided into an upper pond,
middle pond and lower pond, from which 5,000 tons of water flows daily. There is a legend that Rich Man Hwang's residence became a pond,
and thus the place came to be called Hwangji. Long before this, it was called Cheonhwang, meaning heavenly pond.
This legend continues that one day Rich Man Hwang gave cows' dung to an old monk who asked for an offering.
Seeing this, his daughter-in-law asked the monk to pardon Hwang's mistake, and replaced the dung with an offering of rice.
The old monk then said, "This HOME's fortune is nearing an end; there will be a disaster soon. If you want to live,
follow me. But you should not look back!" Hwang's daughter-in-law followed him. When she arrived at the ridge of a mountain in Gusa-ri,
Dogye-eup, she heard the sound of thunder from the direction of her house. Forgetting what the old monk had said, she turned around to see.
At that very moment Rich Man Hwang's mansion collapsed and disappeared into the ground, leaving behind a huge pond. Rich Man Hwang turned into a big boa snake and lived in this pond.
As for his daughter-in-law, she turned into a stone on the faraway mountain, a stone in the shape of a woman with a child on her back.
Of the three ponds that exist today as the site of Hwang's house,
the biggest is said to have been the man's residence itself, the middle pond was a mill and the lowest one - the toilet.
